The theme of coastal bath decor is possibly the easiest and cheapest redecoration theme available. It is all about minimalism and muted colors that vary little throughout the elements.
The color scheme, of course, is that of the typical beach. These colors include light blue, cream, sand, and white wash. If you like you may also include green and driftwood to add some more color.
A soft tone of sand or white wash should be used for the wall colors if you are going for the typical beach feel. If you would like to have a richer, cozier feel, choose a golden sandy color that can represent a warm night time beach scene.
If you have wall tiles that do not match you may wish to change them. New tiles are quite pricey and this theme lends itself well to painted objects so consider giving them a new face instead of replacing them. The painting tile process involves first making sure they are clean and dry. This is followed by a coat of primer that must also be allowed to dry completely. The final step is to add a waterproof topcoat. The representatives at the hardware store will be able to recommend the best option for this task.
The easiest part of this whole process is accessorizing your tropical bathroom. This can be made even easier if you live near a beach that allows for collection of items. Some municipalities have outlawed removing things from the beach so make sure it is acceptable before you beachcomb. Rocks, shells, sand, drift wood, and other found objects can be crafted into soap dishes, baskets, and picture frames. There is also the possibility of creating art with the found objects.
If you do not live near a beach, or you do not have the time or the patience to do crafts, it’s OK, you can still accessorize very frugally. Yard sales, thrift stores, dollar stores, and discount dealers all have a wealth of beach themed items that you can use. In addition, your existing items may easily be converted to belong by a quick buffing and white wash treatment.
Accessories in a beached themed bathroom don’t have to match. The theme is about being random, airy, and carefree. The towels and shower curtain should be a white or light beige or sand. Wicker baskets and furniture will do as well as weathered or white washed wood. For a richer feel, go for the weathered wood to create contrast against all the muted colors.
Keep simple with the art for the walls as well. The pieces that will work the best will contain only one or two small subjects and will be housed in a large frame. If it is decided you would like to include a mural, be careful as they can end up being tacky instead of tasteful more often than not.
An important element that is not used as much as it should is the inclusion of greenery. There are always flowers and grasses that grow at the edges of beaches. Yellow daisies are a great choice to brighten and relax the muted beach colors. You may also wish to add some grass-like plants as well.
The most important thing to remember is to keep nautical bathroom accessories at a minimum and make sure they are simple pieces. A great final touch is the addition of several candles that, when lit, will be warm and relaxing.
